Atlanta Residence

The Altadena Residence was conceived as a thoughtful reimagining of an existing Atlanta home—balancing its original character with a more open, contemporary approach to living. Rather than erasing the home’s history, the renovation celebrates it, using original architectural elements as a foundation for a warmer, more refined interior.

The main level was transformed into a brighter, more connected living environment through a redesigned open-concept plan and the addition of a new sunroom, allowing natural light to move more freely throughout the home. A completely redesigned kitchen and adjoining mudroom bring function and craftsmanship together, anchored by richly veined Blue Roma quartzite and carefully considered cabinetry. The material palette continues into the great room and hall bathroom, creating a sense of continuity from one space to the next.

Original details were intentionally woven into the new design. Exposed brick and warm cedar beams introduce texture and character, while the staircase creates a dramatic transition to the private owner’s suite below. Here, the ensuite bathroom became one of the home’s most distinctive spaces. Large-format Porcelanosa tile, exposed masonry, and a generous wet-room-inspired shower are paired with a custom tub filler that sends water down the opening of the home’s historic coal chute—transforming an artifact of the original structure into a one-of-a-kind architectural feature.

Beyond the visible design changes, the residence underwent a comprehensive modernization. New windows, roofing, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems provide the performance and comfort of a renewed home, while refinished hardwood floors preserve the warmth and character of the original interior. New finishes, lighting, paint, doors, trim, and thoughtfully selected fixtures bring a cohesive level of refinement throughout.

Outside, the transformation extends into the landscape with an exotic stone patio, refreshed grounds, and an existing greenhouse that gives the expansive backyard its own sense of destination. Together, the indoor and outdoor spaces create a home designed not only to be admired, but to be lived in—comfortable for everyday routines, generous enough for gathering, and rich with details that reveal themselves over time.

The result is a residence that feels distinctly its own: contemporary without feeling disconnected from its past, sophisticated without sacrificing warmth, and carefully restored to give a historic Atlanta home an entirely new chapter.
